Step 2: The Mouth & Food Pipe (Esophagus)
Digestion starts in the mouth. Chewing breaks food into smaller pieces while saliva begins digesting carbohydrates. Food then moves through the esophagus into the stomach through rhythmic muscle contractions called peristalsis.
